Organization History
Founded in 1996 as an intervention model for Durham, North Carolina adjudicated teenagers
between the ages of 13-17, we have expanded our programs to include youth ages 9-12. P.R.O.U.D.
(Personal Responsibility to Overcome with Understanding and Determination) is an organization which
offers at-risk and/or adjudicated youth and their parents choices, hope and alternative ways of
thinking about life so that they may become productive members od society who are proud of their
accomplishments and proud of themselves. Our organization has adopted a curriculum often cited in
the literature and touted as successful throughout the nation. Life Skills Training (LST),
developed for preventing substance abuse among young people. PROUD has expanded on the theory and
practice to address substance abuse, issues related to self esteem, consideration of others,
self control of behavior, interpersonal relations, the importance of education, preparation for
working in the world and several others. In addition PROUD utilizes the ARISE LIFE SKILLS curriculum
recommended by DJJDP. Parents are on a parallel path with their children in the program so that
they reinforce at home what is learned and practiced in our sessions.
Goals
During the course of our growth, we have steadfastly held onto our original goals for our program.
They are to stop juveniles from re-offending, redirect behavior, re-ignite
enthusiasm for school, enhance family relationships and develop positive involvement in their community.
Evaluation
Program participants are given a pre-test and post-test at the beginning and end of the program.
Participants and their parents are required to complete an exit interview. This allows us to
evaluate our service.
The P.R.O.U.D. program began just over 16 years ago. Our program is ongoing and we operate on a ficsal year.
We collaborate widely with many other agencies both private and public. We have joined with Teen Court, Juvenile Court,
The Durham Center, Durham Health Department, Durham Housing Authority, Durham Public Schools, City and County government,
law enforcement, and the Chamber of Commerce to achieve our goals. We are viewed as a leader, an advocate, and a resource
for the community, youth, and families we serve.
