Community Need
Proud works to prevent young people from choosing to commit delinquent and criminal acts, and to intervene
in order to prevent recidivism. We have maintained a rate of recidivism among graduates of less than 15%
(based on figures provided by Juvenile services, and following our graduates for at least one year post graduation).
Other positive indicators include reports from parents of behavior, school attendance, performance and graduation
and the facilitator's weekly reports on every participant.
Youth violence is on the rise in Durham. Suspension and drop out rates
remain unusually high in Durham Public Schools compared to state and
national statistics. In 2010 Durham received 203 school based complaints. In addition Durham County Juvenile Court recevied 470 new intake cases.
